Can anyone tell me what causes JD #5's to crack? I've heard from a few folks that they tend to do that, and I'm looking at buying one with a crack near the upper bearing housing. Will a real weld or JB Weld be strong enough for a fix, or will their be enough strain on the housing under load to keep breaking it?

thanks in advance!

Thanks, guys. I appreciate the insight. It's looking like I'll pass on this one, but I really need to find a mower!

If this is the mower with the single rear wheel, a cable hook up to raise the bar, and a gear box that mounts to the frame, we did have a problem with ours. The gear box cracked and broke where it mounts to the frame, taking the gear box out with it. We had it welded once, but it broke again. We ended up buying a ford mounted mower to replace it.

I've got a mower that sounds like this one (single rear wheel, cable to raise bar, etc) but would like to identify it. Where are the markings, tags, etc on these JD mowers? And is there a market for them, as I use a bush hog behind the "B" instead of the sickle. If so, what are they worth? The bar on mine is worn, but everything else looks OK. This one came attached to a 1952 Model B that I bought a couple of years ago.

I ran a #5 for years and never had any crack problems and I don't think that it is a common problem. You might check to be sure that the drive chain in the gear box is not so loose that it is flopping against the inside of the case and causing the problem. There are a lot of these ol mowers around, I believe that if it were me I would pass on the broken one and look for one that is in good shape.

I don't know what wouyld cause them to crack. I think it would be from somethign being loose, gearbox etc causing slop and excessive vibration. I'm not sure what the "upper bearing housing" is you refer to. If it is the top part of the gear box I suspect JB weld might hold depending upon how much stress is on it. There is a lot of vibration in these mowers so not sure anything but real weld would hold. I have a number 5 I ran for years and no cracks. don't know that that is a common thing.
