I helped my neighbor load a sickle mower from some timber and was wondering what brand it is. There is green and red paint on it, it has a pivoting shaft that mounts to a wide drawbar on a IH or maybe an Oliver, its a trailing mower with manual lift, and has a shaft on the right side (as standing behind the tractor) that goes to the lift mechanism, that may have been used to raise/lower from a mechanical lift from the tractor, but looks like the shaft has been cut off a few inches from a bend on the front of the shaft. He has mowed with it already by making a pitman stick and alot of penetrating oil. I have some part numbers to go by, the casting the rear wheel swivels in is Z-337, the gear box cover has Z-342, breakaway casting Z-339, and the inside bar foot/head has Z-348-XX. thanks for your time and trouble, chris in stanton neb.

My guess would be that it is an Oliver. I recently was given an old Oliver sickle bar mower which I believe to be a model 82. Most of the casting numbers start with Zs and Xs. There are also a lot of XX on many parts. Red paint is also a clue that it is an Oliver as many pieces of Oliver equipment had red paint before they switched to the cream color later on as their second color. Just my piece.....

Could it be a very old John Deere? Castings on later JD mowers started with "Z" in their numbering schemes.
