I have a old 66 baler the plunger when in the far back postion(in chamber, when in heavy hay will not move, the fly wheel in front is spining and the shaft and yoke on the back side going into gear housing are spinning but nothing happens. I back of fly wheel and clean out the hay,not much of it really, and it will start working again. I have been given a couple ideas as to what may be wrong, needles out of time and maybe a tooth or two is missing on gears in gear box. Any help or ideas? Thanks

Dick, I'm not sure my baler has quite the same set up, I'm not 100 % sure what part you are taslking about. Could you try and explain it to me? Thanks John

Have you got the NH owners manual for this baler? That explains timing the thing. NH should still have it in print, and it only cost a few bucks. I have a 66 parked in the weeds that I used for about 3 years, then quit damaging my mental health and got a 68. Anyway, it's been a while but your 66 does sound like it's out of time. The book tells all about getting back into time.

Any man that will stick by a 66 needs all the help he can get.

When the plunger is held captive during the needles cycle through the chamber the yoke / fly wheel continue to rotate. In order for this to occur the connection between the plunger and the fly wheel/ yoke must be released temporarily. I believe that this mechanism (what ever it's called) is out of adjustment and is not reconnecting as it should which will leave the plunger at the aft end of the chamber and is usually accompanied by a loud clanking sound. When you turn the wheel by hand and clean the hay out of the chamber you reposition this connecting link. Does that help? Dick

If I understand your problem the plunger sicks in the back of the chamber with very little provocation. Doesn't sound like a timing problem. Check the plunger latch dogs, these keep the plunger captive until the needles complete their cycle, perhaps they are not retracting quickly enough after the needles complete. Another and more likely culprit is the release mechanism on the drive yoke. Mine is composed of a cam and flat stiff springs that allow the shaft to elongate when the plunger is held by the dogs. Check your book for adjusting the tension on your release mechanism. I can check my book,New Holland 80 wire tie, if you don't have a book and your device sounds similiar. Dick
