I have a 278 that I bought used a season and a half ago to replace an ailling 66. When stuffing it full it throws bales you could build a house with. With a lighter crop the bale shape suffers, bales are longer on the right than they are on the left. Checked the tine settings and I only have two sets (both straight). Manual and stickers on machine show three with the left hand set being angled towards the bale chamber. Anyone know why the third set would have been removed? There are marks on the tine bar showing they were there at one time.

sometimes the manual calls for removing the third set of tine in difficult bale shape conditions. maybe in stover or rye or something like that. but i'd find a set and put in all three in according to the spacing in the book. start from there.

Recommend you get the Operator Manual, Repair Manual and Parts Manual if you can find all 3 of them. Follow them to the letter and your problems will be over.

Early NH balers (pre-300 series) have no service manual. The ops manual has troubleshooting and repair info.

Don't know why it was removed but i'll bet that is why you are having bale shape problems in light hay. it is not feeding hay far enough into the bale changer.

I have baled wheat straw and bahia with my 275 nh You will need the tines to make good bales. You can also adjust the penetration of these tines by sliding the bolt that attaches feeder carriage to plunger. My guess is they robbed these off to put on another baler. Make sure you put these on tight i have lost new ones because of this. If these tines are the ones closest to the plunger then one is probably a little shorter than the other. Mke sure you tell the dealer where they are missing from. The last ones i bought were about $18.00.
