I am having a problem getting parts for my 10 ft mounted Howse cutter. The FAX they [Laurel Mississippi} sent me of my gear box diagram isn't even a possible set up. Has anyone been able to communicate with these people and get the parts they need? I sent picutres of the busted pieces, spent 2 hours on the phone...ad nauseum etc etc...anyone had success getting parts? please inform.

I have a 5' Howse that I've owned since new. I've had no problems with it other than breaking a blade on a rock. If you saw the rock, you'd know why it broke. I called around trying to find a blade, and nobody carried aftermarket. I ended up calling Howse directly and they sent me a manual and a blade for a good price quickly. My sales person was courteous and I had the parts I needed with no problems. Mower still works great, and I don't know why so many people are down on Howse, but then I'm not trying to cut down trees with it either. Get yourself a manual and order your parts by number, that might help you get the right stuff.

Chad,

I can tell you from experience that Howse is a pain in the .... I was finally able to get parts for mine through the local dealer. They were after market parts. The after market parts were less than half the price of the Howse factory parts.
This spring I was at an auction and saw a nice used John Deere cutter. I bought it. Tried it out finally just recently. It works better used than the Howse did brand new. I sold my Howse cutter recently.

Thanks for everybody's response. Bad engineering, bad design---yes! get yourself a John Deere! I have an ancient 5 ft JD that will cut anything you can drive the tractor over. was slow but ok for along fence row, road bank etc. I was hiring out CRP mowing and decided I had time to do it myself and really needed a 10 ft. even diesel fuel ain't cheap these days. I have now gone to local welder machine shop---they have rebuilt a lot of cutter gear boxes with success.
