Any comments on these? I have an opportunity to get one in operating condition for $200. Is this a good deal or am I asking for headaches? The machine is in OK condition with some rust, but it is complete and in operating condition.

I had one for many years. They are a pretty decent machine for the money. Easy to work on and will cut plenty good. They have more vibration than the New Holland machines and don't crimp the hay quite as well, but for $200, I would not hesitate to buy one. I think this machine was actually better than the subsequent models made by IHC.

As Roy said, IF it is a 990, I wouldn't be afraid of it at all, I run one, my brother has two(one for parts), I love mine and it's a real simple machine to work on. The worst part is the "wobblebox" those get pretty expensive if they go out. From my experience and from others experience, don't only put five squirts of grease in it a year--grease it good. Never seen the insides of one myself but from what I understand it's basically a crankshaft inside of the box, would probably work better if you could run oil in it, but grease is what it takes. Just grease it plenty the first time every year and then grease it normally (5-10 pumps) everytime after that. Maybe someone else has some experience with these also.

Robert,
If it is a 990 IH mower-conditioner your looking at, they are pretty good old machines. I still use a 7' model and have had good luck with it. Some parts have become unavailable, but all the wear items, sections, guards, belts and the like are no problem. Pretty hard to beat the price, I would buy a parts machine for $200 if it was offered. Good luck. Roy
