NH 68 Baler questions

Well, a well-used but solid 68 followed me home. Got it with a model 50 thrower for very little $.
Two problems. The chain that drives the knotters is missing, anybody know the pitch and length? Second, went to pull the knife to put an edge on it, and the hex for the allen bolt stripped out while I was pulling the bottom bolt. Came about a third of the way, but it was turning hard. Any ideas on getting it out? thought about welding a nut to it, but it's in a hard to get to place. A Also thought about sacrificing the allen wrench by welding it in. Finally, there is a 6" or so length tension spring that attaches to an assembly under the knotters, but I can't see where the end furthest from the hay chamber attaches. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The sping just goes over the frame for the right hand knotter. It just holds tention on the twine finger so it pulls forward when needed.

Chip: since nobody else has answered, I'll tell ya what little I know. I just replaced the wadboard drive chain on my NH 66. Went to New Holland dealer with same questions about it. He knew the size link but not how many links, but said he could call NH during, that they'd get the specs out and tell us. I bought the NH chain for $19...it was a 20 foot length, and I counted links on my old one and cut to length but in your situation maybe you should have your parts guy call NH if nobody here knows the answer.

good luck,
Tom

Thanks Tom. Went to the local farm store and bought a 10 ft length and just cut it to fit. $17 Couldn't find the knife bolts though. 0 for 2 local NH dealers. Had to order 3 of them at $7.50 each. NH must be mighty proud of them.

Yeah, I've got mixed feelings about NH parts. In many cases, their prices are about the same or even less than my local tractor supply store "generic" parts. But for some stuff--mostly the parts you can't get elsewhere--they are really out of sight. Had to scrap my old rake because a new part would have cost more than I paid for the whole rake!

glad you're getting what you needed, though!
