New Idea built many horse spreaders (four wheel with tongue, adaptable for both draft horses and tractors.)till the horse scene faded off, except for Amish and regular draft horse users.
I was wondering what the last model and year they would have been made? 10A? A draft horse friend of my dad's said he remembers seeing them on the lot thru the 1970's.

If I remember right the last run of horse drawn spreader was in 1972. I remember going by a New Idea Dealer and my uncle saying that that was going to be the last run on the horse drawn units. That was the early summer of 72. hope this helps. Dan

New Idea made some very good manure spreaders for both tractors and horses. I have a horse drawn one for cleaning my one cow or two pig operation. I got it for $14 at an auction, put $120 in wood into it and it has worked fine every since.

They started the 12's 14's and 17's in 50's but when they got enough orders they made some 10a in the early 70's

New Idea is still in business I think, and I think also still making spreaders, steel wheeled and all, perhaps up in Canada

New Idea is now part of AGCO. They do still make spreaders, but in Hesston, Kansas now, and no more wood with steel wheels. Coldwater, Ohio plant is closed. Lancaster Spreader in Pennsylvania apparently got the tooling for the old New Idea horse spreaders, as they are making new ones that look exactly like 10A spreaders for the Amish market. They also supply tractor versions.
