i have a NH 469 haybine that i just got, i noticed that the chain driving the top roller is missing, the rollers still turn fine since they mesh together,i suppose i should put a chain on the upper roller drive tho, or is there some reason not to run it with a chain? just figured i would ask before i went and put a chain on it

If you run without one or the other chains on they will get out of time due too the rolls spreading while the hay is going through it. When its running empty after a few revolutions they should get back into mesh with each other. They are last I heard about 900 to 1000 bucks each so get a chain on it, 10 bucks or so for a chain is a much more pleasant thought!!!!
I've got a lot of hours in front of a 469 and a 488 haybine and am not putting hours in front of a 1380 Deere hydroswing but my 469 still gets its share of the work load.

Be sure and check your idler for wear. My 469 was throwing top chains until I replaced the riveted idler with a solid one. Works fine now.

replace it, if you use it very long that way you will destroy the rubber on the rollers. they are very expensive to replace.

If you run the haybine with out the top roller drive the top roller is not timed. this mean the clearance between the rollers is not right and the hay is not conditioned properly

I have been told that you can damage the rollers by driving the upper one with the lower one like this. However, I cut about 5 acres with mine once after the chain broke, and didn't have any problems. Just the same, I would put a chain on.
