PTO Adapters

Greetings;
I have a Ford Jubilee tractor with a 1 1/8" 6 spline PTO shaft. I recently took delivery of a 60" Walco brush mower and discovered that it has a 1 3/8" PTO coupler. I have seen PTO adapters for just this situation but would appreciate any advice as to whether using one is either dangerous or dumb. I don't have any building as yet and the aspect of actually changing the PTO shaft in a field is less than thrilling. Any insights greatly appreciated. Erik

With your Jubilee you don't have live PTO. With your tractor when you push in the clutch to stop the tractor you also stop the mower. However because the mower is connected to the drive wheels by the transmission. Thus the momentum of the spinning blade will try to push the tractor forward, like into a tree, fence, building, etc. To avoid this and an accident you need to use an " over running clutch " on the PTO before connecting the mower. These run in the $50 - $60 range and come with a 1 1/8" input and a 1 3/8" output. Available at tractor dealers, farm supply stores, and likely maybe from the sponser of this site.
Good luck with your tractor and mower.

I was just going to say exactly what RWK said.

The adaptors are not dangerous by themselves. There are thin cheap 'sleeves' that don't seem to last more than a week. There are beefier types that pin on with a roll pin which are kinda always on, or those with a thumb pin that connect like a typical pto & make your pto maybe 3-4" longer.

But, you really want an over-running-coupler, as mentioned. These can be found to also change pto size at the same time, & that is what you want.

Since all but that first cheapie that breaks in a week will lengthen your pto, you need to make sure there is enough play in your implement shaft so nothing breaks when you lift the implement.
