On a 'weed safari' last night I came across an old IH combine that has been outside for awhile. However, this one had an engine that looked like an IH 'B' or 'Cub' minus the rear and and the front wheel. However, the engine was 4 cylinder flat-head (spark plugs coming straight-up out of the top). Does anyone know anything about this machine. Would the engine be of value to anyone?

This sounds like the old IH model 62 that my dad had about 50 years ago. Had what looked like a cub engine that started with a crank. Spent most of the time under the maple tree in the yard fixing it, but that were I learned most of my machinery fixing skills. Great memories.

This is in MN. I think it was a corn head, but I didn't look very closely. I assume that the engine only powered the combine works, and that it still needed to be pulled by a tractor. I didn't see a seat or stearing wheel or anything. If they used to put cubs on combines, then it is probably one of those. Has the same shaped gas tank and grill / etc. and seemed in reasonable shape. If there people that would be interested in this, perhaps I'll see if I can save it. I think the guy is calling the scrappers in a couple weeks.

it's a continental motor. made by the continental company. it has an IHC mag on it though----right?
we have a similar combine sitting in our weeds. the motor still turns, though it has sat for 30 years.
i would at least save the motor and its related sheetmetal. a motor like that would make a good power source for any stationary or mobile project you could think up.

Yes, I saw the tag on the mag and it had a long sentence on it that said IHC somewhere in the middle. Therefore, I assumed it was an IH. I'm sure you are right. I'll have to go back and see if it turns over. What is the easist way to check. Can I take off the starter and get to the flywheel or something like that?

if it has a starter it's much newer than the one we have!
ours is crank start and a crank off a C is similar, but a bit longer than the one for the combine (we have both cranks but they'll interchange in a pinch).

if you do not have a crank you could try turning the drive pulley out the back.

hope this helps.

Thanks Karl - I doubt it has a starter as well - I'm skeptical I'll find the crank. I'll try the pulley in the back.

Some of the old IH combines and balers were powered with cub engines. If it's in decent shape, it might be of value to someone looking to re-power a cub with a non-salvageable engine.
