I was thinking about raising pumpkins this year, I live in TN. I was wondering what time of the year to start, whether to start in a plant bed or cups, or just in a row.

I would think in Tenn. you could plant mid-June from direct seeded. There are some hybrid varieties like Appalachin and Gold Medal and Johnny's has Rock Star and Big Rock that I tried and will make a nice big pumpkin in 100 days or less that I have planted up to July 4 and got a good crop. Don't plant all one kind, try a few varieties and sizes. If you can, plant one batch and then another about a week later and see how they do. If you are selling wholesale you will need them earlier, retail you can sell right up till the weekend before Haloween.
If you want to do transplants they will have to be in cells, they don't transplant well unless you have a good rootball of soil, like melons or cucumbers. The transplants should not be too old, maybe 2-3 weeks when setting out.

Chris, I planted 660 ft of pumpkins this year...about a week ago (NW Vermont)...planting will depend on your locality. Check your seed pkg's they should tell you how many days before they are ready (about 105 days +-). Pumpkins can be stored up to 2-3 months max if done properly. Figure you market is mid Sept - Halloween, so time them for that. Remember that you can't hurry them changing from green to orange, so plan for mid to late Sept harvest. You'll probably sell most of them within two weeks of Halloween, and you want them at full orange by then. After plowing and harrowing the field I ran my single row potato hiller (wide as it would go) and made 110' long rows about 8ft apart (center to center)...planted 3 seeds in a group about 6ft apart in the rows...will thin later to best plant. After planting the group of 3 seeds I pulled some extra soil around the edges of them to protect them from drying out too much. Plenty of websites about pumpkin growning...do a search and read up....enjoy.

Chris: One night about three months ago I was looking for info on something I was thinking of growing. I found a site where you could just type in the crop and all the info you would ever want was there. I can't find this right now, I should have bookmarked it. I will ask my wife in the morning she will remember.
