I use a old two row, steel wheel, I-H corn planter to plant about 3a of pumpkins. I premark the rows,8ft wide. I take the seed boxes off and place a funnel in the seed drop hole of the planter. The bad part is, I then have to beg my wife out to walk along side the planter and drop the seed in as I drive as slow as the old C will go. We plant about a acer a hour. I've tried to make up a seed plate with no luck as I plant alot of varities of pumpkins with different size seeds too. Any better Ideas. It gets harder every year to get my assitent out of the house not to mention the paybacks are costing me more every year!!

You should be able to modify a corn plate by cutting/grinding off or filling in some of the cells. Maybe you are being too fussy about how many seeds it drops. If you have them on 8ft rows 2-3-4 seeds at a time should be OK. They have done studies in NY and have found it hardly makes any difference. How many seeds does you assistant drop at a time and how far apart? To check out the modified plate she could walk alongside for a while and tell you how it is doing.

The old covington i use to plant corn with was being used to plant pumpkins. You have all different sorts of plates and confugurations on the setups.

See alot of those old 400 sell cheap at auction. Guess I take a closer look at how they work. I figured I'd get a comment on me doing the driving. She won't drive my farm tractors. Just the kubota which the wheels run on top of the rows and pack the ground too much. The JD214 is her tractor. Thanks

DoubleR,at first the 400 will seem complex! But once you inspect it ,you will find it's a pretty simple but effective way of operating a planter.
I just used mine yesterday-planted 8 acres of sweet corn, and it worked flawlessly.
A manual is necessary,it contains row spacing and population charts,as well as calculations to use for different tire sizes and row widths.
Next year we're putting out sunflowers with it.
