Been thinking of buying an ATV (4 wheeler) for running around the farm. Decided a JD Gator or Kaw. Mule not fast enough for some needs (running off poachers, etc.) and some trails are narrow. Any suggestions? Don't want to start a brand war but any pros or cons are welcome. Thanks, Glenn

Personally i wouldn't buy a Polaris. Way to many problems, especially when they get older.

My brothers diesel Mule is a nice ATV and it will haul a lot, along with being easy to get into and out of. The diesel starts easily in cold weather and always idles and runs well!! Also it has a "real" diesel, not a converted gas engine, and it just "sips fuel". (unlike the bigger gas models) It's easily the best of that type of ATV. The Gator won't compete with a Mule, especially if you have any mud!!

I also have a Big Red 3 wheeler, but compared to the 4 wheelers it's way too hard on my back!! I prefer a 4 wheeler to a 3 wheeler for a work ATV. The extra weight really helps when you need to "pull" something!

I quit buying Honda 4 wheelers when they took the Hi-Lo trans. out. I wouldn't buy a work ATV that doesn't have Lo range!!

The two best 4 wheelers i've owned are the Yamaha Kodiak and Yamaha Grizzly that i have now. They really can take all the real work a farm ATV gets!! Also the Yamaha's belt auto is easily the best auto made today. The Yamaha belt is "always" under tension. It has a seperate clutch like the gear drive models, it's NOT a "snowmobile" style clutch that continually eats away at the belt!! My Grizzly still has the origional belt in it, and last time i asked my dealer, they had NOT replaced even one belt to that date!!

Keep in mind, the bigger the motor the more gas it will guzzle, just ask the owner of a 700 Polaris about that!!

Robert

Go ahead and get a 4-wheeler with a small pickup bed and seating for 2. The Mule will go 25 MPH. The Polaris Ranger 4 WD will go much faster and has longer suspension travel for off road. Do not get the Ranger 6 wheel - too hard to steer. The 4 wheel Ranger with 4 wheel drive and the pickup bed is your best bet.

The Kawasaki MULE will run 25 mph. That is plenty fast for most uses. I have had atvs before I got my mule but I wouldn't go back to an atv. The hauling ability of the mule is very handy on a farm. Safer than an atv too.

Hi Glenn, I`ve had several atvs made by Honda, Suzuki, and Polaris. I know this will raise the ire of somone but I wouldn`t give you a plugged nickle for another Polaris. The 700 that Ty has is a new model so we know it can`t be too old, let`s see how he feels about it after 4 or 5 years. Polaris has the best ride of any I`ve tried and the steering on the 4wd is light but the machines seem to be plagued by durability issues. Honda has always been top shelf for me but I currently have a Suzuki 500 full time 4wd that I bought based on price. I wasn`t convinced that I needed 4wd so I bought what I could get the best deal on. Now that I have 4wd I can`t believe I waited so long to get it. I`ve got over 2000 miles on the Suzuki and the only thing needing repair was a CV boot that was impaled by a stick. I use this thing like a tank breaking through the woods and it is unstoppable. Also has a top speed approaching 60mph if you need to run someone off. I`d buy another especially now that you can select between 2 and 4wd on the fly. My only complaint with this machine is the torque steer from always being in 4wd but you get used to it pretty quick.

My buddy has an older Honda Foreman and my brothers has an '85 200M Honda 3 wheeler..... ..We use both of them on the farm....Chase cows, pull wagons, run them in during lunch, etc..... ..I prefer the 3 wheel to any 4, the Foreman we have is 4x4 and I can go places with the lighter 3 wheeler where the Foreman wouldn't dream about! Plus it turns shorter and seems to work just plain nicer. They do get alittle tippy on turns until you understand how they ride. I am looking for a Honda Big Red 250 3 wheeler as we speak!

The old 3-wheelers sure were versatile--I've put more miles on a 185s and a 200 than some people put on their cars! The Big Reds, with reverse, shaft drive, and fore-and-aft suspension were an excellent machine. My neighbor has an '85 that's still driven daily, and a friend has an '86 that he's thinking about selling. Of course northern NY is a long way from Pennsylvania, but you never know... I do prefer the 4-wheeler for some things though--I've got a '94 Polaris Sportsman, and I have been very happy with it. No reliability issues at all--the only things I've replaced were one front wheel magnet and the guard spring in the starter. A 4-wheeler is more stable, rides better, and has a bit more weight for pulling things, but a 3-wheeler is lighter, easier to load by yourself (try loading an 800 lb 4x4 alone!!) and more manuverable.

Have you looked at the max 6x6s? They go about 25 and steer like a skid steer but, they are amphious, and you can get one with a truck bed on it. I am in the process of building one right now. You can buy plans for it from the edge in Austraila. Just my 2 cents. Go to the link and check it out. It takes you to a general 6x6 site though, and you can link to Argo, Max and all of those from there. Barnz
