I am thinking of buying a 6.5' 3pt disc at TSC. Is the box frame model worth the extra couple hundred dollars compared to the angle frame model? I have been trying to find a decent used 3pt disc of this size, but I am running out of time. Thanks for any thoughts.

You didn't mention the size of your tractor. I have an 8N and a Case VAC and the 6.5 footer is all they can really handle. The heavier one is by far a better deal but a 20 HP machine won't really pull it. I buy new stuff because I can get parts readily. Last Fall I had to repair my disc because some relatives whacked it into some trees turning. It was no prob getting back into service.

Sorry about that. I'll be pulling it with a Ford 860 w/45hp. As long as I have enough weight I think I should be able to pull it ok.

I had the same question about a week ago. Used discs I've seen looked pretty beat up. I bought the heavier box-frame Kutter disc, for durability as well as weight. Even it could use more weight. My Allis D-17 (45 horsepower or so) can pull it fine, but lacks down force on the 3pt, so going too fast causes skips. Cuts well as long as I don't hurry, but I may try chaining a railroad tie on top of the frame, as someone here suggested.

The box metal frame is a heavier frame and will help with making the discs cut in better..with the angle iron frame, I feel it is too light. I have the angle frame and run it with a railroad tie on it to help it cut in better..
But, as always, go with what you can afford and you can always rig a weight up if need be..If you can do it, Get the heavier one..
Good luck with what ever you decide.

Right on Tom! Dab, you might want to look around at auctions, or used equipment dealers for a "name brand" disc. Many are better constructed. I'm using a 8 1/2 foot MF, and wishing it was even heavier!

I pull a ten ft. A-C wheel disc on new plowed ground or anything else I've ran into easily with 46hp I-H. Some ground, I don't even plow depending on what was planted previusly. I paid 300bucks for it at a auction and it cuts alot better than any 3pt disc I've seen. For what its worth.
