I am going to have a look at a 10-15 year old NH 451 sickle-bar mower and would like to know if there is anything to look out for in this model. The dealer claims that it is in "like new" condition (and they have a good rep). I plan to use it with a JD 1020 tractor. Thanks, Eric

I have a model 451 that's probably at least 20 years old. I have had to replace the part that actually moves the sickle bar (the part that pivots with the sickle) last winter. I was dreading taking apart the "wobble" box. It wasn't too bad. It's much quieter now that I got rid of the slap at the pivot point.

Parts are readily available.

I've got the 3 point model which is a pain to mount. I have no idea what was going through the NH engineers' heads when they designed the mounting mechanism...it's just a pain to get on the tractor because of the "sliding" tubes that the mower mounts with (you kinda have to see the mechanism to appreciate it). I originally bought it to mow hay, but my hay was so thick that I went with a drum mower. Now I use the 451 to just mow the road banks and around my pond.

Other than being tricky to get on the tractor, it's a reliable mower. I wish I had the pull behind style to just avoid the hassle of mounting it.

The guards (double guards with non replaceable ledgers) cost nearly $13 apiece. The singles with replaceable ledgers are nearly $9. Most have the double/throw-away guards. If the edges are rounded and/or the ledger surface is worn down, it won't cut very good. It cost me about $200 to replace the guards on my 9 footer.

Most people who can't get their grass cut with a sickle, don't take the time to maintain the cutter. You need to have good ledgers, and have the knives aligned properly.

The 'newer' ones have adjustable hold downs, and possibly bolt on sections.
