NH 469 rollers clog

The previous owner of the better of the two haybines I'm rebuilding tells me he had real problems with the rollers clogging when cutting thick orchardgrass. He said he would have to stop real often and clear them. Though the rollers aren't in great shape, all the rubber ridges are there. He said removing the chain drive to the lower roller helped for a while.
I can't seem to lay hands on a manual to check the setup. Anyone have any ideas on why this is happening? Thanks in advance.

If tall grass is getting into rollers before the sickle cuts the grass You might think about a faster ground spead or slower reel speed or adjust the reel position. In my experiences have lead me to believe reel speed related to ground speed is very important. The best I can explain it is the reel needs to be traveling at a speed that it seem to be rolling the speed you are going. Too fast reel speed results in hay going ino rollers before the cutter bar gets there to cut the hay to slow reel speed result in hay bunchin up in front of rollers both will cause problem. The first time I tried mowing thick orchard grass and clover I slowed down a gear because I did not want to crowd the machine. I had a lot of problems untill a neighbor said to go back to the regular gear. and if that did not work we would try to adjust thee reel speed. Slower is not always better and sometimes can create headaches and problems.

Pretty sure I found the problem. Someone WELDED THE TOP ROLLER ADJUSTMENT PIVOTS IN PLACE! I think I can get to the welds to cut them free with a torch, but I don't understand why somebody would have done this. Is the bar that runs between the two adjustment bellcranks on each side a torsion bar, to keep pressure on the top roller? It looks in good shape. And both adjustment turnbuckles are there, though the little link on the left side adjustment shaft is busted. I guess you need to remove the gearbox to get to the PTO side. I dunno if I'm courting more headaches by cutting those welds, but I hate stuff that just ain't the way it should be. Any guesses as to why those pivots might have been welded down, and what the underlying problem might have been?

I had the same problem occasionly when I had a 269. With very tall thick orchard grass the grass will actually feed into the rollers before its cut by the sickle bar. Adjustment helps some and keeping the sickle sections sharp also helps. Now it may sound like I'm working on the wrong end of the machine but the real cure for mine was to go to STUB GUARDS. They do require a little more maintenence and adjustment than regular guards, but they made it into a different machine. My two cents worth is try it with your grass, may never be a problem. If it is you might try the stub guard route.

Looked closely at the roller tension adjusters today. The thin metal strap/yokes at the bottom of the adjusters look twisted, so maybe something having to do with that adjustment isn't moving freely. Needs new knives on the cutter bar too. Got to get that manual.
Forecast is for more wet here in the Mid Atlantic, so I've got a few days to try and figger this thing out.

As a custom baler here in north central Texas I have ran across this problem with my 469 on several occasions. Problems I have seen causing this problem are: cutting extremly thick and tall hay that tends to bunch up under the windrow forming hood and going too slow and not allowing the cutterbar to stay ahead of the flow of hay through the rollers. It is a $itch to clean out thats for sure. Just one of the never ending wonders and joys of the baling business.
The operators manual is part number 42046913 in the catalog I have to order them out of. You can contact your local dealer or call 1-800-635-4913. Got a lot of hours in front of my 469 and its a real good machine.

Buy the operator manual from the NH dealer, and slow down the ground speed if it is clogging.

My 474 does that in any really long stemmed grass, worse when wet with dew. Finally just used the disk mower and tedder, left the haybine for short stuff and baleage.
