I have a JD 350 sickle mower, and will be mowing grass hay this spring. The fields consist largely of timothy, fescue, and ryegrass (1 field. What type of sections (smooth, under serrated, over serrated) should I use? The machine had under serrated installed when I bought it. I have heard that smooth sections work better in grass, is this true?

Thanks for any input, Kenneth

Welll..... ..

Smooth might be best, top would be worst, but you will probably end up liking the under the best for all-around conditions.

What kind of ledger plates does it have, smooth or serated? That makes a diff too.

Paul- I think the ledger plates are supposed to be the smooth ones, although they look a little chewed, making it hard to tell whether smooth or serrated. I'm might check at the dealer and see exactly whether they're serrated or smooth tommorrow. Thanks, Kenneth

I would put money on the ledger plates being smooth and the underserations on the sections causing the markings on them now. I only use underserated on my swathers and my New HOlland 450 sickle mower. If you use overserated and sharpen your sickle you loose the advantage of the teeth on the sections, granted its not much after sharpening but its some and every little bit helps.
