I found a JD 24T baler for sale that the guy wants $250 for. He said the it is in good condition, I haven't looked at it yet. I have a Farmall M, will this be enough tractor to run the baler? I will not be pulling a wagon or anything else.

Bob

Bob: 35 hp will run just about any square baler out there today. Over the years a good many farmers operated balers with 25 hp, and some of them baled in excess of 20,000 bales per season. My dad and I once baled 9,000 bales in 2 days with a Farmall 300 and put them all on the wagon with a thrower. 50 years ago not many people bought a Farmall M or SM just to bale hay with.

Hey, a 300 is my choice for running the baler too - they've been together for decades. The TA and live pto really make it a nice baling tractor. Almost always with a hayrack & me behind, but got a bale basket last year.

In winter it runs the feed grinder.

Paul: 300 was a great old tractor, bit of a heavy drinker but we shouldn't hold that against it. When my 300 was about 5 years old, we bought a New Holland Super 69 baler with thrower and the next spring a NH 460, 9' haybine. The 300 used to break a dozen shear bolts per year on the haybine, and burn 2.5 to 3 gal. per hour. Later the 560D and 656D never broke a shear bolt on that haybine in 12 years. The 656 would run the haybine on 1 gallon per hour. However we never did bale as much hay in a two day period with those two diesels around as we did that one time with 300 backed up by Farmall 130 and a Cockshutt 540.

To enlighten you a bit the 9,000 bales in two days is about 5 teenage brothers wanting to show the old man things would go just as fast when he was away on a trip. Only problem was he came home two days early. I being the oldest took the heat as he didn't see how we were going to get all before it either got too dry or it got rained on. All alfalfa at that. It was a gutsy move but it paid off, I never had any trouble getting him to cut alfalfa early after that, but my gosh he was angry when he got home. I was milking cows at the time, I'll bet they gave 5% less milk that night.

Didn't do that, but I can relate to such experience. :)

For me it's been pretty much a one-man operation, even when dad was out here - he enjoyed supervising a lot more than actually doing work. So, I kept it to 500 bales or so a day, with me loading & unloading the hayrack & barn. He did drive the tractor anyhow..... ;)

Paul: 500 bales per day, not too shabby for one guy with just a tractor operator for help. We weren't getting any more production per man.

A farmall M will run this baler with no trouble at all. The lack of live power take off will make it dificult in heavy hay but power is not going to be a problem.
