What do you all think about Ford 501 sickle bar mowers? This one I can buy is needing the knives replaced. The bottom of the hitch needs to be fixed I think this does with putting it on your drawbar. The pitman arm needs replaced. It is about a 6 foot on. I can buy it for $125. It is in East Tennessee. Thanks alot

We have a 7ft. 501. We broke the frame that goes out to the sickle several times, so we junked it. However, we have 2 neighbors that have 6 foots and they have never broken. I guess it just won't take the extra foot of length. They take a while to hook up and the pitman breaks sometimes, but they cut pretty good.

We now have a JD 350 and my brother in law has a NH 451. They are belt driven and easy to hook up. Of course they will cost a little more.

If you're not looking to spend much and don't mind fixing this one, I think you'll be satisfied. As far as sections, we always just bought generic brands from the local farm supply and they fit the 501 just fine.

Good luck!

I've got a six foot 515, the next model newer. Can't speak for the price, but a couple of things to be aware of:

The older mowers (515 and 501) take a cutter section that is different from most others...I've had to special-order them (they look the same, but the hole spacing is slightly different). Not *that* costly, but it takes a week or so to get them which is bad if you're in a hurry.

The other thing is the size. At least local to me, lot of the rakes and such are sized to 7 foot and larger mowers. A "normal" rake will snag up and rake portions of 2 mower passes so it is a little difficult sometimes to get reasonably uniform windrows. I managed to find a Ferguson DEO 20 rake that is perfectly sized and let me match windrows to my little baler.

For the repairs needed, that sounds pricey to me. You can buy a whole replascement toothbar for about $80 and a pitman arm for about $20. I do not know how handy you are about doing the hitch-up repairs. We got ours out of a farmers barditch and had to replace most of the bearings, pitman arm and sharpen the teeth, but he gave us the whole thing, but watch those bearings, they can be expensive, think we spent about $120 to replace them all.
