I just bought a second-hand Kuhn cutter and I'm wondering what lubricates the gears inside the cutter bar. I will assume it's an oil bath. Where do I check for fluid levels and what type of fluid do I use? Thanks in advance for any info!

with mower in transport mode ..look about 2 ft up on bar on the side that runs on ground, there should be a plug to remove..fluid should just level with bottom of hole..check while cold and after bar has been in transport mode a few minutes..some old mowers had 2 check points..and 2 fill points.. check gear box with bar flat in cutting mode..use lower fitting should just barely run out or level with hole..use ep4 gear grease..if your gear box is low and bar is over full watch it close..oil from gear box goes into bar if lower gear box seal leaks....have nice day may god bless...if any questions e mail me ..

I think I know you. I have a book on your mower. Do you live in southeast Missouri and does Semo Flying Indians mean anything to you?

Two places to check. With cutter up there is a plug about 2 ft from the inner end of bar. I think it opens with 10MM allen wrench. fill to plug with 90W with cutte rdown there is one for gear box plug about 2 inches from bottom of gear bos. fill from plug on top of box. When they get well worn the gear box oil gets into the lower part and will be too full. CHECK DAILY!!!! Mine is a New Holland built by Kuhn. The other Flying V was a fellow named Vance who started a flying club at the university where I attended.
