: : : : : I have a chance to buy a weat drill. It has metal boxes, small seed boxes (last used to plant alfafa) sp? It has all the charts on the inside of the box lids. The tires are on automotive type wheels (snow tires) They are asking $350.00 : : : It has been kept in a shead, and is in good condition. Is this a fair price? What else should I look for? : : : Thanks, Don: : : : : $50 would be closer : Hey Clyde, you won't believe this, but here in the NJ/PA area, a JD van Brunt FB drill with double disk openers, good fert. boxes, and small seed box in excellent, shed kept condition is worth $600-700. Even drills from the seventies sell for $1500 to $2500. : And Don, seeing how new ones cost like $7-10,000, I don't think $350 is too bad of a price as long as you can get a few years of work out of it before the openers wear out. Replacements are still available, but for what it would cost to change all of them, you might as well get another drill. That's what I ended up doing. I gave $250 for a Van Brunt FB 17 X 7. All boxes solid, tubes were fair, I replaced all of them with rubber. Had to put on one new tire, got a flat pulling it home... HA HA.... Things to look for, make sure the drive shafts for the seed and fertilizer turn, mine were froze up pretty good, took a couple of days of soaking and wrenching to free up, make sure the lift mechanism operates, and watch to see how many seed tubes crumble if they are the metal ribbon tubes, deduct $5.00 from the asking price for each one. Pull the seed cups off all the holes, and check out the sheilds (fertilizer spouts), and see how many are rusted out, $12.00 each to replace. All parts are still available at the John Deere dealer, and Operators Manuals and Parts Manuals are available at John Deere Publishing 1-800-522-7448. Hope this helps.
