My dad prefers to plant with his Farmall M, he can't see over the hood of his 560 very well. This works fine with our old 1240 that uses a single acting cylinder. My question is, if we want to use a 7000, will it work properly with a single acting cylinder? My main concern is the hydraulic marker arms. Anyone out there had any experience with this? Thanks for any input you can provide.

I used to use a John Deere 70 on a 7000. The problem I had was the lower gallon per minute flow of the 70. The planters were designed to be used with tractors with higher flow. The marker arms would raise very slowly. There is a hex shaped valve that screws into the planter frame inside the hitch arms. It is spring adjustable for the speed the markers fall. The marker raise speed is controlled by a tiny orfice in the poppet inside this valve. I drilled this small orfice out a little bigger. It doesn't have to be much bigger tho. I think I used a 3/64 drill bit. But don't hold me to that as it's been a long time ago! In fact, I bought a second poppet from my Deere dealer. I then had one for the old tractor and one for the newer tractors.

You should be fine with a single action cylinder on a 7000 since their cylinder mounting doesn't allow down pressure from the cylinder anyway. I have seen several 7000s with the marker hose tied into the main lift cylinder with a T fitting which would work with your M with only one outlet.

Yup. You should be fine with just lift. Markers might come down real slow on cold days...

My concern would be hyd pressure. Takes a lot to lift a 7000 full of seed & starter fertilizer. My Oliver s77 couldn't do it. Not sure on the output pressures of an M.

Just put a bigger cylinder on it.
