What is the best thing to use on the open knotter gears to lubricate them, grease seems to just build up dust and trash in the gears and pack them full. This is on a new holland 275 baler. Any ideas on what others use if anything would be appreciated, thanks Ken.

I bought a NH Super 69 new, baled 30,000 bales per year for 17-18 years, never put anything on the open gears. Even the zerks should only have what manual calls for. Too much grease just collects dirt. You get those gears full of a grease-dirt build up and something is going to break.

Check your operators manual. On my Deere it specifies 1/2 to 1 shot of grease perfitting every 50 hours. "Do not over lubricate".

Too much grease just attracts dirt. I used to have to clean mine constantly to keep them tying. That was when I though you never hurt anything with too much grease. Then I read the manual and low and behold..... ..... .

I do like a shot of WD 40 on the polished surfaces of the gears and knotter parts after I finish each day. Keeps the surface rust away so they don't take as long to polish off.

Some years back I used to put up quite a few bales with a Deere 24T. I used Lubriplate (dry graphite spray) on the knotter gears. Worked for me, but maybe someone else will have input on why this is a good/bad idea!

nothing, some grease will get on gears from lubing the knotters. I always clean area once a year.

Thanks for the input, I'll try the graphite and see what happens, and i'm probably over greasing it also, thanks again, Ken.
