I am planning on buying a rotary cutter. One dealer told me that a slip clutch could be a disaster and take out the pto on my tractor if I didn't periodically adjust the slip clutch. He said most people were better off with a shear pin unit. What's your opinion?

I've had both, and i wouldn't buy another with a shear pin!! Every spring loosen the bolts on the slip clutch, and "slip" it! Then reajust it for the hp of your tractor! Doing it the first time you use it each spring is all you have to bother with!! Both my Woods rotary cutters have slip clutches!!! Robert

Depends on the size of the cutter and the size of the tractor. With 80 hp as my smallest tractor and a 15' I sure wouldn't want to be changing pins all the time.

I've had a slip clutch stick before and it will trash a gearbox. Never had it hurt a tractor before. Not saying it cant happen.
