I have a Ford 3600, which is about 40 hp, and am looking to purchase some planting equipment to hobby farm a 10 acre field (ie milo and sunflower for dove, maybe some corn). I'm looking into the JD 71 Flexi-planter and have some questions. One: how many planter units could my tractor pull? WIll this planter cover my needs? Any recommendation regarding buying these new, versus looking for used equipment? Thanks.

I'm a corn/soybean guy, so don't know on the other crops, but should do fine on corn, 4 rows easily, probably handle a 6 row most of the time if you aren't fooling with fert & herb & insecticide all on the same rig.

Why buy a new one, aren't they over $1000 a row, well over?????

If you will spray & not cultivate or harvest, you could do the other crops with a 3-point Herd spreader & drag the field, but might not be the effect you want... I think.

Paul: Many thanks. I didn't know they were so expensive new. I'll try to find something used. Is a Herd spreader the same thing as a broadcast spreader? I have one of those, on a three point. If I broadcast the corn and then disc it in, will the corn be deep enough? Since I would only do this on a 3 or 4 acres, the cost of lost seed is not significant, and my kids can hand harvest however much they want.

I was planning to burn down the field by spraying either Gramaxzone (defoliant) or Remedy (picloram) a week before planting, then run through the field with a cultivator, then disc, then broadcast the seed, then disc. Think that would work?
