Does anyone know the capacity of a New Holland 565 small square baler in tons per hour. I realize it depends on the hay but I need a general idea as a starting point for calibrating my new preservative applicator. I usually try to run the baler as full as possible.

The short answer is "no, I do not know the capacity of your baler" I do know something about calibration of preservative applicators. Your output per hour is a critical calculation. Too low an estimate and you will underapply preservative (a very bad thing), too high an estimate and you will over apply. Even a slight miscalculation can result in wasting a lot of preservative (big bucks in a hurry). I keep a digital moisture tester, a set of electronic scales, and a bathroom scale at the farm for this (and a microwave). I use the little scales and microwave to initially calibrate my digital tester on each day that I am applying preservative. Bathroom scales are to estimate bale weight. I run 10 bales from the heaviest part of the field, weigh them, and time how long it took me to bale them. That gives me my hourly output, erred on the heavy side. Then I can calculate the preservative rate. Takes about an hour to get everything set up but, after a couple of mistakes on each side, I learned that hour is much better spent than 10 hours of tearing apart stacks to let the hay dry out or coming up a full barrel of preservative short at the end of the day (at $1.00 per pound). I had over applied to the tune of 10# per ton of hay. At $100 per ton that was half my profit, wasted. Email me if you need more details.

I agree with Dave. You have to take the time prior to baling EVERYDAY and periodically throughout the day to ensure proper preservative application.

Just out of curiosity what type of applicator and preservative do you plan to use?

I currently am using a custom made applicator with a computerized flow meter and needle valve and I use Fresh Cut from Kemin. I buy it from my local LOL coop.

I think the brand is "Agway" got it from my local Southern States Co-op. 25 gallon tank with a 3 nozzel boom. Meter and switch for cab. I think the units are built in Owensboro, KY. Preservative is 67% buffered propionic acid, from the same co-op. Comes in 15 gallon plastic barrels, returnable for refill.
