I was recently given 8 pieces of old farm equipment off of a two acre lot that a church is going to clear for extra parking lot space. On the lot is an Osborne No. 2 sickle bar mower. From research I've found that this unit was built about 1919 when IH owned Osborne and shortly before Emerson-Brantingham bought the name. This is the ultra-rare mower with the 8 foot cutting blade and it is absolutely complete except for the wheels. About 15 years ago one of the neighbors took the wheels painted them black and they are now used as lawn ornaments. I've talked to the people with the wheels and they absolutely refuse to sell them to me. My questions are: (1) What would be the maximum amount I could offer to them so that they might sell? and (2) If they don't sell where would be the best place to look for replacemnet wheels? Hopefully someone out there can help me out.

Adam,

I wish I had that mower in my collection with or without the wheels.

If they don't want to sell the wheels have you thought about offering them a trade? Take some wheels off of a different mower, paint them up and offer to do the labor to change them out.

Next thing you might want to try is to see if the wheels off of a different McCormick-Deering mower might fit on the Osborne. You may have to have the wheels machined but who knows?

My 2 bits worth,

Old Iron

Trust me Old Iron I am very glad I have the mower even if it has no wheels. I tried offering them some more decorative and larger wheels I already fixed up off of an old John Deere 594 hay rake, but they did not want them. They said they liked the mower wheels and since they had them for so long they didn't want to trade. The guy who used to own the lot the mower is on said I should work out a deal with the people's children since the couple is older and they probably will be in home within the next 5 years. I just finished up my college semester and I'll go home in a few days to speak to the couple's children. I'll try to let you know how that works out. I thought about putting on a pair of wheels from another IH or other brand mower, but I am a stickler for originality and I would like to save that as a last resort.
