Just got a JD 30 combine

looking for resto info...

I'll be picking up a JD 30 pull-behind combine sometime in the next week or so from a local farmer (got it for free, even!). It's been sitting in a field for a number of years (got a 6" diameter tree growing up through the "paddle-wheel" on the front). but looks to be fairly complete, except for the wood parts, which rotted away long ago.

Was wondering if anyone can point me to a site or info on restoring the unit. I have a '50 Ford 8N I plan to use it with, but can borrow a larger tractor if needed. I'm relatively new to farming (moved to central IL from Atlanta, GA about 2 years ago), so any tips or suggestions are welcome. We'd like to eventually grow a few acres of oats and wheat (we have 15.5 acres total, about 12 of which is in alfalfa right now).

Thanks for any suggestions...

A Ford 8N will not pull a model 30 JD combine. We use a 30 and pull it with a Farmall Super MD and it is all the MD wants sometimes. The 8N will pull an Allis-Chalmers model 40 All-Crop (40" cut) but probably not an All-Crop 60".
You will be better off to find an combine that has been stored inside even if you have to pay something for it, it will be less that is will cost to get this model 30 operating. They are not designed to sit out in the weather, even though the 30 has no canvas drapers to rot away. A 30 sold here (NC) at auction 2-3 years ago for $400, in usable condition.

Garry,

Thanks for the info - I'm still so new at this I don't know which implements work with my 8N. I can borrow a larger tractor if I need, so it may still be worth pursuing the 30. Once I get it home and figure out how bad it really is, I'll either reman or pass it on to someone else.

Of course, I could always go for a Funk conversion for the 8N!
