If you would be so kind as to look at the photo of the bill hook cam bearing and give me your opinion. Does that bearing look to worn out?
I also have photos of the whole bill hooks on my web site.Just click on this link then click on the NH68 link on the left side of my page.

The cam roller is worn out.

I've replaced both the billhooks and cam rollers on my old Super 68. You have to raise up the knotter mechanism (watch your fingers...I've snagged a little skin off just doing that!). It really is possible to change out both components without much disassembly...it doesn't look that way at first. Do it in good light, as those darn little roll pin holes are hard to see on old rusted/dirty knotters. Use lots of penetrating oil or WD-40, as the components tend to be tight to drive out.

The worst part of the whole deal was not passing out when the dealer told me what a new billhook cost!!!!!

Watch yer fingers when you rotate the knotter as it will catch the drive gear and start to move the components and can give you a surprise. I figgered that out after about 4 or 5 "finger jams" with the wiper arm. Slow learner I guess. Billhook isn't hard or expensive to replace as I did my 269 knotter last year and changed both. No more missed knots. Good luck.

Kelley, here is how I remove the billhook, Raise the knotter and take off the the billhook tension cam, remove the knife arm and push the knotter up until the billhook turns and then you can get to the little rolll pin and drive it out and then pull the billhook out and catch the pinion gear, you can buy just the tongue and roller but it would be better to replace the whole billhook. Hope I wrote this where you can understand it.

Sounds easy. I was out trying to get the billhook off tonight.
I was able to remove the pin. The bill hook wont just come out though.
I figured to take apart the billhook cam.
But I cant get the knife off. The Bill hook blocks the knife so I cant get it past it to remove it. I have tried lifting the frame at about every angle. Ether the bill hooks prevents removal or the roller is in contact and I dont have clearence.
You know I should have checked. I wonder if I finnished the whole knotter process the last time I tripped the knotter. Hmmm. I will check tomorow.
Should that knife just come off? Mine is over the bill hook with the frame down.
Dang I bet I didnt. I remember stopping turning the fly wheel when I saw the twine running into the gears. I spent about 2 hrs out there cussing at that twine knife too.

You say the billhook wont come out even though you have got the pin out? maybe its got a little rusted in (penetrating oil time ) The best (only?) way to remove the knife is to take the knife arm off first. Remove the nut holding the knife arm and it should pull off. Sometimes I found you had to push the little shaft that holds the knife arm back a little to give yourself enough clearance to wiggle the knife arm off. You might even have to tap the shaft back with a hammer, but if you do, put the nut back on a thread or two first and then tap it gently. If you damage those threads you got trouble. :(

The reason I gave up after 2 hrs cussin at the knife.
I found my self looking for my real big hammer.
Bad things happen when ever I find that hammer so I thought I better go in the house.

Yes it sure does... and the billhook wants to be bright and shiny with no rust or paint on it...or it will not work.

Looking at your post below I can see now why you are having knotter problems. the components need to be bright and shiny, billhooks, retainers, needle eyes etc.the twine guides should not have any rough edges, and the knife should be good and sharp. otherwise all you end up with is shredded twine!

Ok sounds like a new set of bill hooks are in the offing.
How do you replace those?
I was out looking at it and cant quite figure how you get them out to replace them.
Thanks

I seem to remember that the billhook is secured by a roll pin that goes through the billhook drive cog.It may be difficult to find the end of the pin as it goes through the "flat" on the cog if you catch my drift. You will have to knock out the pin with a fine BLUNT ended punch. Actually Kelly, a thought has just occured to me. Have you got a workshop manual for your baler? because I am sure one would explain everything to you far better than I can!

Eeks! how do I answer that one... I am in England,
I am not even sure if you can get that manual over here but I should imagine that they are likely to be available in USA. Its a long time since I had anything to do with knotters myself as we went on to round balers.

The operator's manual and parts catalog are the only technical info available for that baler. NH did publish a service manual for standard and heavy duty knotters to support later balers. The info in that book would probably be helpful for 68 knotter repair.

Maybe a N-H dealer might be able to source a Workshop manual for you { but I bet it will not be cheap :( }

I replaced the bill hooks in my 68 a couple seasons ago. Made all the difference in the world. The only time it might miss a bale now is when it switches twine balls. A service manual for a newer balers knotters should work. If you compare the knotters on the 68s and a brand new machine you'll see they are identical. They haven't changed a bit.
