I am a 14 kid who loves his old farm equipment!! I recently went to a neighbor and bought his oliver 2-row plater(parts planter-good seed cans though-bonus) an old disk I cant identify and a John Deere 2 bottom plow that I want to find out what it is. It is a two bottom believe 14 in. on steel w/no back wheel. Any ideas? I also went to another neighboor and bought another disk I believe IH but not sure, an old IH hay rake, a 3 section harrow, and an International three bottom on steel(trip release). My question is did they make add on bottoms for these plows? Also what model is it? Dose anyone have the lift device? Someone must have stole it for another plow. What are these IH plows worth? I have 2 more two bottoms on rubber just like the three bottom. Does anyone know the paint scheme for these plows? I plan to paint one of the two bottoms to pull with my Farmall H. I also bought one of the IH 2 bottoms (earlier mentioned), a 10 foot Famous Ohio cultipacker(anyone heard of this company) 2section Brillion rotary hoe, and 2 sections of spike tooth drag from a guy. Dose anyone know what any of this equipment is worth? The first neighbor I gave $10 for his equipment, the second I gave $50, and the third guy I gave $80. These bad deals? Thanks everyone.

Matt

When identifying old equipment, castings are usually a lot of help. I just found out that an old plow I have is an Oliver just by telling a friend about the casting numbers. IH was famous for putting the trademark on most every piece.

Matt: We do know one thing for certain, you are an agressive young lad. You've acquired a fair bit of equipment for $140. You have so much in one post hard for we old guys to remember and comment on it all. On your 3 bottom is it possible someone may have it geared up for lift with a hydraulic cylinder. A fair number of 3 bottom lows were converted. Plows are quite easy to idenyify with enough detail. The IH plows with lifting tail wheel and linkage to the front lift are most likely Little Genius. When I say Little Genius there were several model numbers from 3 to 15, the No 8 being the most famous. Near the end of production of these plows a model 16 was added and they were just being called No 8 or 14 or 15 or 16 tractor plows. It was kind of an eveolution, the name Little Genius just disappeared. Most of these plows were produced until the early 1960s.

The IH plows with fixed or no tail wheel will be Little Wonder plows. I am not up on painting, I would just confuse you on that.

Discs become a bit more difficult, so many similar features. If a lot of your equipment is IH you should have a copy of book 150 Years of IH by CH Wendel I have not seen a good book on just implements. An implement book in color covering all makes would be a great resource. Would be a good project for someone as interested as you are.

My suggestion would be post one implement at a time with great detail. Nail one at a time. Just keep the questions coming.

Right now any one of those plows are worth plenty to me. I broke mine yesterday and was not quite done. Saw several IH 2-14 on rubber good shape painted up fair to slow rust with good bottoms, tires and molboards going for $295.

I broke both bottoms plowing a field that has not been worked in over ten years since I lived here and who knows how long before that. I have heard that many of the lift problems are due to the grease or lube inside setting up and drying out. Try taking it apart cleaning it and replacing the lube that is supposed to be in there. I have seen earlier posts that indicate that clears up alot of problems with them.

Mine is missing the clutch assembly that slides on next to the rim where the release lever locks into. Thanks good luck on getting fixed up and plowing.

We would need to determine what you have before I can tell you if parts are available here. I am not sure what parts are compatible with other plows if you need to transfer the entire assembly. Hugh MacKay seems to be more knowledgable in the IH area than I am. You might want to consult him.

Farmer: I suspect what he has is a 3 bottom plow that someone has removed the hub and gone hydraulic lift. It may even have been hydraulic lift from beginning. Of course, I don't have a good enough description to say for sure.

The hub lifts never worked as well on three bottom plows as on single or two bottom. The problem being even though the plow was heavier, it didn't place a whole lot more weight on that lift wheel. Under some late Nov. wet and greasy conditions the lift wheel would just slide rather than lift the plow. The plows on steel with good corks worked alright It was the rubber tires that gave the problem. I have seen many a rubber tired plow with a pickup wheel chain on that lift wheel. It would even slide on three bottom plow. The wheel chain was even common on the two bottom plow.

Hydraulic lifts weren't very complicated, all that was required was a hydraulic cylinder from frame of plow down to that left axle shaft. The later ones had a linkage going to axle shaft and the cylinder was paralell on top of frame. Very easy and very inexpensive to change over. You put a stroke controll cylinder on there and you could even do away with one of the big levers.
