Hi! I've been looking at a John Deere 4 bottom plow. It's a 4-14,cat.2 with a tail wheel.I couldn't find a number on the plow but I only looked at it real fast .It has all the coulters on it and looks to be in real good shape. My question is this-How much would this weigh about? And would my 49 A john deere be able to pick it up with the rock shafts? I have a category 2 hitch on the tractor. The man said that the plow was made so people could take off one of the bottoms and get a 3 bottom plow. What do any of you guys think? Thanks-morgan

We pulled a 4-14 mounted plow with a 630 for over ten years and it was a little more plow than we had tractor for the soil here in nw Iowa. We were in 2nd gear (boring) in the fall and 3rd gear (slightly less boring) in the spring. We even removed the back bottom once when we had some dry alfalfa and it still couldn't pull the plow above 2nd gear, but it was faster than 1st gear with the front end in the air when we tried it with four bottoms. We also have a '51' A and a 3-14 trail type plow is a full load for it. We usually plowed in 2nd gear in the fall and maybe 3rd gear in the spring if the pulling was't too tough. 2-16's semed to work better. You are asking way too much out of your A pulling 4-14's and your front end would never stay on the ground. I don't know how your front end would act with 3-14's.

You might pull it in 2nd gear, we pulled a 3-16 pull type behind our A for 15 years

Morgan, sounds like a 813 plow. A one time I had a 52 A with a Yakima 3-14 plow. The powr-trol handled it well. We have heavy soil and hills. Your plow will weigh about the same as mine. The A pulled the plow just fine. And you may have to add some front weights. Take off the fourth bottom and maybe you can take off two bottoms but I don't see why you would need to.

Your A won't pull that unless you have sand to plow and the front of the tractor will pick up before the plow does. I have pulled a mounted 2x14" plow on my 52A and even that makes it light on the front.
