New Idea Cut/ditioner again...

Thanks for all the responses on my previous question about the NI Cut/ditioner 272. Since the responses were pretty positive, I think I'll buy it - I'm going to ask the guy if I can try it out first, but if it does OK, then I'll go with it. Here's my new questions: I'll be using my Farmall 460, probably on the limits of it's capacity, but I think she'll handle it - how fast should I go to cut? What gear do you guys use? If I need to sharpen those blades, what's the best way to go about it?

Jim:

I Think your 460 Should handle the cutter. I Would say start out in 2nd gear and if it does a good job then if you have a TA Tork up. Then if you are still doing Ok you can try a higher gear. If it goes to slobbering or gets to much of a load then you are moving to fast. Remember to keep your PTO up to speed or a little over. Different types and densities of hay will pull different.
As for a sharpining the blades a good body grinder will work or you can knock out the long bars that hold the paddles on the rotor and grind them on a pedestal grinder. Generaly the the bar rods are hard to get out. Be sure to wear eye protection.
