Wisconsin engine suggestions?

Just bought an old NH 66 baler with a Wisconsin 2 cylinder engine with electric starter.

Previous owner says when last used (2-3 years ago), the engine ran well once it started, but that it was very hard to start...he said the magneto needs a rebuild but he really recommended switching to a coil.

Over the next few weeks I'll be cleaning up the engine and have 2 questions, one general one specific:

1) Is the starter probably 6 or 12 volts?
2) Any special things or peculiarities I should be aware of on this engine? (I know engines fairly well, but have never seen a Wisconsin before)

thanks in advance for any and all help!
Tom

The most important thing to look for on an air cooled engine is weak valve springs. The heads run a little hotter on an air cooled engine and the springs get weak. New valve springs solved my starting problems more than once.

6 Volt Pos.Gr. Check spark, if it is blue & strong it is OK. Check compression, could be valves .

More familiar with the V4's - if tuned up they run all day, but don't start when they are hot.

I need the magneto tuned on my v4 also (dies if the temp is over 85 degrees, I'm assuming something is marginal in there), and the fuel pump leaks a lot. Need to start looking for parts be4 swathing season!

My swather sounds like it runs exactly like yours, except I replaced the fuel pump last year and the points are the only thing that gave me trouble after. The pump fixed all the starting/dying problems.

Paul, Are you sure it's the coil causing the problem at temps over 85. On my swather with the v4 there is a switch that protects the engine from overheating by shutting it down. I have to deal with this if I'm working it hard at 85-90 degrees. Not sure if all were set up that way or not.

My uncle had that problem with his, aluminumn heads. Mine is all cast iron, very old, don't think it has such a switch. My uncle delt with his by romoving/shorting/bypassing the switch & driving. :)

Good thought tho, & I could be proven wrong. :) Could you tell me where the switch would be located if there was one?

One mine it's on the right side head if your facing the fan. It sticks out of the cooling tin straight up and in plain view.
