Just picked up what the owner says is a "JD 26" flail mower for really cheap (it's about 8ft wide with two wheels on the back end). Was wondering if any one has ever used one of these...I'm having trouble figuring this thing out.

It seems the flails turn in a direction that discharge the cuttings forward, rather than to the rear. Called the original owner, he says he only used it cut corn stalks and that you can flip the drive mechanism to the other side and it will rear discharge. That doesn't look like an easy thing to do. Has anyone ever heard of this??

Also, it has the "s" shaped blades; are these for rough cuts or are they other types of blades available? Thanks for any help,

Dan

The 16A that Bernie is talking about is for green chopping feed for livestock, a bit different than what you have, as it delivers cut material to a blower to put it in a wagon. The 26 and 27 were sold as stalk shredders. I don't know about changing the drives around, but the knives that are in it are what you are limited to using. If you have rocks where you're planning to use this thing, I'd mount a piece of plexiglass behind the tractor seat, as they will throw stones at the driver!

Tim:

Thanks for your comments...no rocks here but I'll get that plexiglass ready nonetheless. The more I look at this thing, the more I'm coming to the conclusion that it is designed to go only one way. Talked to the dealer yesterday and he's ordered a manual for it. Guess I'll know soon enough...

Any more thoughts or experiences with this machine would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again,

Dan

I owned a 16A back in the '60s. It had the curved flails; there were no others then and they did throw the material forward and up under the hood. It went backward over the flails and into a cross auger that fed it into the blower. There was a door or cover over the auger that could be fastened up to allow the material to go over the auger and out the back onto the ground. This was also an excellent rig for chopping brush up to two inches thick because the stuff being cut was not being run down. I used mine with a 420 JD crawler which went extremely slow and had live PTO when you pulled both steering levers back. HTH
