Will sickle guards bend or break?

I have a New Holland 456 sickle mower. All the guards are brand new. One is slightly low in front and another is slightly high. If I hit these hard enough with a hammer to move them (like the manual says), will they bend into the correct height, or will they break? These are guards without replacable ledgers, $12+ apiece.

Ive had beter luck straighteneing guards with a piece of pipe slipped over the guard like the others suggested. I imagine youd break less this way compared to a hammer but ive never broke too many either way.

Well if you do break one, or have to take one off and replace it, don't throw the old one in the scrap bin... used in conjunction with a 3lb hammer they make a brilliant tool for drawing out fencing staples!

I have a Hesston mower with stub guards. I use my shop press to straighten them. One breaks once in a while. Also a narrow piece of thin metal either in front of or behind the mounting bolt will tilt it to make it line up. HTH

Just find a pipe about four feet long that slips over the guards, and bend them back into place. Much more control than wanging them with a BFH. Not likely to break, but if they do, what have you lost? Can't remember breaking one in the last 30 years of so.

If the fingers do no move after being hit with a hammer (generly the yellow NH fingers(or guards)than heat them up cheery red with a torch and give them a few good wacks that is what we have always done with the littel ford

Most sickle guards are made of relatively soft "maleable iron" that is designed to be bent, but sometimes they do have brittle spots where they will break. A lot of early farm implements had maleable iron parts that were used as a means of adjustment. The governor rods on MM tractors into the 50's were maleable iron; bending the rods was the only way to adjust the governor.

While I do not have any experience with your particular mower, I have adjusted many guards with a 3 pound hammer. Most got to where I wanted them to, and a few broke. Maybe I am wrong, but I thought that was the only way to adjust them. I have often had to adjust even new guards a little to get them to line up properly.

If the mower is new to you, I would sure try removing the offending guards to make sure they had been installed correctly and nothing was between the guard and the bar.

On my Ford 501, I have had problems with some farm store guards not fitting right on the bar. The ones from Ford/New Holland work better for me.
