Can someone tell me about this hitch? Am I missing something, or did the old JD's have a hook-up for this? (OK - I'm not a JD guy - sorry). What is the best way to convert this for a normal pin hitch?

Without that release you could roll the tractor over backward on you, be safe, use the release

A standard horizontal loop clevis. Many have been for sale on this sight. You can also get them at most farm supply stores. The problem may be the device above the rear portion of the spring hitch. This need to slide forward freely to lock in the loop end of the hitch and the pin drop into the hole you see in the center of the picture.

The early A's and B's had a loop type hitch that worked with this style hitch. You just need a flat type clevis to adapt it to most tractors.
