Mark, Your plow is one of the #4 series, likely a #4B plow. The original steel wheels were 26" diameter on the furrow side, and on the land side it had a 32" wheel IF it was made before 1942. If it was one of the later enclosed clutch models and made after '42, then the land wheel was 26" also. The way to tell is to measure the vertical portion of the land axle from the outside(top) of the curve to the end of the threads. Later axles were longer to make up for the shorter wheel and will measure about 23" while the earlier ones will be 21". It really does work better to have about the correct size wheels, so you are going at it right, but there are lots of adjustments that will help too. (First enclosed clutches were sometime in 1940, so don't just go by that) Good luck. Bob

Bob I have several 4B plows 2 have open clutches. One has the 32" land wheel and the other has a 26" land wheel. Then I have a 4B with a 32" land wheel and enclosed clutch, I beleve it is the first year of enclosed clutches. The last 4B I have uses a 26" land wheel with enclosed clutch, I think that one is quite a late production 4B.
Bob are you by chance coming to the NY expo this summer?

ET, Are you sure your open clutch with the 26" land wheel is a 4B and not a #52? The open clutch #4B uses 6 bolts to attach the wheel. The #52 plow only has 3 braces between the beams and no lifting spring. 4B has 4 braces and being heavier, has a lifting spring to help raise it. 4B plows use 1 3/4" axles vs. 1 1/2" axles on 52. You probably know all this..sorry, I get carried away with plows sometimes. I can't recall seeing an open clutch 4B with 26" land wheel, but that doesn't mean they don't exist! I will be in central NY the week before Expo, my folks are celebrating 65 years of being married. But right now plans are uncertain if we'll stay or end up in Iowa for that expo.

Yup its a 4B I thought it odd too. The other way of telling a 4B from a 52 is 23" of clearance from the tip of the plow point up to the frame. I'm going to have a 38B at the expo with a 2x12 4B open clutch plow there. Eric

Eric, I sure would like to see your plow, can you get a number from the 26" land wheel? usually stamped on the inside surface of the "tire", how many bolts hold it on? Does it have the same axle vertical length as the 32" wheeled open clutch plow? I don't doubt your word, I just want to know as many variations as I can find out about. Bob
