I have a 24T and am looking at a 14T Bailer. What are they worth? The 24 T I need to get a pto shaft for since the engine that was on it died before I got it.

The 14T looks real good. Was told that it had been kept under shed before the present owner had it. He said it was too small and plugged up too much. Sounds like operator trouble to me. I am use to Case 230 bailer. What would the 14T be worth if in good shape? I thinking of buying it if he don't want too much. Also what is the major differencein the two? I live in Maine. Thanks

14Ts are getting old. Last ones were made in 1962, I believe. Just because it's green, don't expect to be able to get all the parts anymore. Deere has run out of some of them. Most 14Ts that show up around here are plain worn out, and only bring a couple hundred at best, even with all the part-time haymakers. A 24T in good shape with a chute will bring $1000 here. With a #20 mechanical ejector, same thing. With a #30 hydraulic ejector, $1500. I don't know the major differences between the two, since we jumped from the 14T to a 336.

I have a 14T that I picked up for parts ($50) for my 214T which I paid $700 for (private sale) in Central Iowa. Balers and Rakes are expensive here too. Too many people that have horses, small square bales bring $3 - $3.50 a bale so lots of people put up hay part-time. I tried to get knives for my 214T last year and the JD dealer showed they were "obsolete" and "unavailable" at any JD dealer or warehouse in the U.S.. This shows there are parts that are no longer around, and the 214T is newer than a 14T. However he has always had every part I have ever needed for my JD 37 sickle mower when I needed it.

I've heard they are cheap in Iowa as well. Here in central MN we have lots of hobby farmers (like me). We only have a few acres, and fixing equipment each time you go to use it is half the fun.

At a large consignment auction in MN last weekend, most of the balers from that vintage went for about $150. I've seen them from $50 - $500 in ads. I paid $150 for a 14T at that auction - found one that was complete and had a mounted toolbox that included a few spares and an operator's manual. I hear they bring more /less in different parts of the country.

I wish I could find any rake or baler for less than $500.00. You don't even see them setting around. A rake regardless of make is around $700.

Bruce.
Where was this auction at?
I live north of the cities and those balers sell in the $400 range up here.
I want to road trip a couple up to these auctions.
Ponto has a auction this weekend up in Ogilvie, MN
They have a consignment auction twice a year.
Any thing with green paint on it will bring a big price.

It's near New Prague - below is a link to a page on the web site. The next one is June 14. The April one is always the biggest of the year, but I'm sure you will find plenty of stuff in June. There were 4 rings, it started at 8 A.M., and at 1 P.M. they announced they were 1/2 done. I couldn't stay to the end, but that is when some of the best bargains are. There were about 10-12 older NH/JD/IH square balers and about the same number of rolabar side rakes. The rake prices were all over the place ($30-600), but the balers all went about the same, unless they had a thrower. I also bought a JD 894 rake for $75 (similar vintage to the 14T - they make sort of a matched set). Last spring I bought a JD 495 corn planter (again same vintage) for around $100. I took it straight to the field - it did a great job. I'm not necessarily a JD guy, but I like knowing that I can still easily order spare parts.

One piece of advice, if you buy something small there, don't let it sit too long. I bought three piles of used steel posts that disappeared by 6pm when I returned. I was out $35 - the office couldn't do anything to help. Sad it's come to this.
