I want to prepare my weed field which is currently my yard for grass seed. I have an 8N and a 2 bottom plow which is in good condition. How do I set the plow with respect to the ground. Also how do I adjust the rotation of the plow with the two hitch points for the best plowing. I only want to cut in about 4-6 inches. I have never plowed before and would appreciate any advice. Also should I cut the weeds down and run a disc across the ground first?
Thanks in advance

DO NOT PLOW THE FIELD. YOUR BEST SOIL IS USUALLY THE TOP THREE INCHES OR SO. IF THE WEEDS ARE SHORT MOW IT THEN DISC IT. IF THE WEEDS ARE PRETTY TALL, MOW IT AND A FEW DAYS LATER BURN IT. IF YOU DISC IT WITH THE WELL ESTABLISHED WEEDS STILL IN IT, YOUR PROBLEM WILL BE WORSE. SOME OF THE OTHER GUYS SUGGESTED TILLING, THIS WORKS WELL AFTER YOU HAVE RUN A DISC OVER IT.

You might not even need to plow, unless the ground needs a lot of leveling and smoothing you could just mow it. When the weeds sprout back up spray with 2-4D (rent a little lawn sprayer from a local rental center). The grass will take over when the weeds are gone. You'll probably need to spray anyway since the ground will be full of weed seeds that will sprout as soon as the ground is tilled. On the other hand, if you want to experiment with the plow, mow first then disk, then plow and disk again.

For best results get or rent a rotary tiller.

3 passes or so with a good tiller (in decent soil anyway) and you're done.... Seed it and roll it.

To get things 'fine' enough for a lawn you're gonna' need to disc and harrow quite a bit behind your plowing (lots of passes)

I agree with Tim, your too shallow to work good. Is there any implement dealers near you? If so, after a couple of times discing, rent a tiller for the 8n and hit the yard with it. You can adjust the depth and break up the soil much finer. I have a 5' tiller I use, and it works great. Also find some old bedsprings to pull on the final levelling, nothing works better to smooth it out.

Darrin, I don't think plowing that shallow will work very well. You need to go deep enough to turn the sod under; that's 8" or better. If you go much less, you'll have slashed up sod on the surface, and have to disc it to smithereens. If you want to go shallow, I'd say forget the plow and just disc over and over until its fine enough to rake off for seeding. I don't know about plowing with an 8N. Maybe the boys on the N board can tell you.
