What do I look for when buying my first plow?

I just bought a 1965 IH 424 (37 pto HP). Should it be a two bottom plow? I plan to plow 2 or 3 acres. Are there different types? What's important to look for? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Lift style: There is wheel lift, hydraulic lift, 3-point lift, or (possibly with your IH?) 2-point lift.

The wheel & hydraulic lift are pull type, the 2 & 3 point are attached to the tractor.

There are lots of brands, get one you can still buy plow lays & landsides for.

Hydraulic lift is better than wheel lift if your tractor has hydraulics. The attached plows can be more fussy to set, but are more manuverable....

There is even a disk plow, which uses a couple of large disk blades instead of plow bottoms - not very popular here by my heavy soils, but I've heard of them.

I'd recommend the mounted (2 or 3pt) for ease of use. Also pay attention to the condition of the plows. Are they sprung(bent out of shape from hitting an immoveable object)? Any breaks or poor welds? Be sure the moldboards(large end sections) aren't worn thin, and aren't severely pitted. If there's a light coat of surface rust, no problem; they'll clean up after a little plowing and pull easily. They should have been given a coat of grease or paint to prevent rusting. That's how you tell if the seller takes care of his equipment. If they're severely rusted, they're junk. They'll never "scour", soil will stick, and they'll perform poorly forever. Look for jointers or coulters. Jointers are little plow blades that run ahead and cut the sod. Coulters are disc blades that do the same thing, and are more common on newer plows. They aren't necessary, but you'll be happy to have them, if you're plowing up a lot of sod. Are the shares (front sections) worn? Look at a few sets of plows to get an idea what's worn and what's not. The points wear and need occasional replacement. You need to know what brand of plow you have, and if and where you can get replacement shares. Happy plowing, and don't forget to savor the smell of green grass, fresh earth, and exhaust fumes.

2-16 should be about right.
