I have the opportunity to purchase a Massey Ferguson 124 Baler in real good condition and I was wondering how good these balers are. This one appears to be real tight and has a nice paint job. What should I look for and watch out for? What were the weak points of these balers? What years did they make this model? At the present I have a New Holand 276 that the dealer during the Winter Special Tune-up said that it would cost a bunch to repair it and? that I should come out and go through the inspection list with a salesman present. Now why would they want a salesman present to go over a inspection list. Anyway, I'm not one to do deals with dealers on used equipment with mine in their shop. I'll see what it needs and pull it home and figure the worth of it myself.
Does anyone know how the MF-124 compares to the NH-276? Thanks In Advance!

I had a 124 and it was a good baler, gave very little trouble. It would only bale with co-op gold crest twine though, never could get plastic to bale in it. I was very pleased with it and would buy another one at a good deal.

Ernie: I know a guy who bought his first baler a NH around 1953 and kept that New Holland until about 1960. Since then he has owned 3 new Massey Ferguson balers. I know at least one of them was a 124. Probably all 3 were same baler, just improved with new model numbers. There were a half dozen guys in our area, that each time they traded for a new baler it was MF This was an area where in the 1960s and 70s New Holland was king. Didn't matter what color tractor was, baler behind it was New Holland. I always maintained if MF held those few loyal customers, must have been a decent baler. I know at least 2 of those guys were no nonsence guys, with no brand loyality, if something didn't perform it was history.

The interesting part about the first guy I mentioned is the reputation of his first New Holland back in the 50s made them what they were, in our community, although the host of IH 45s around was probably best boost NH got.
