I built a house on about 5 acres 3 years ago and I am just getting around to doing some landscaping. The landscape is rough, in the sense their are quite a few goofer holes, some shallow ditches, etc, just a rough surface. It is difficult to cut with a lawn mower, it kind of re-aligns your spine being jarred around so much. I own a Massey ferguson 135 - approx 35 horse, with a rake and loader. I would like to smooth out the field. I was thinking about purchasing a backblade or scraper box. I would like to do this ASAP, before the grass starts to grow and the ground is thawing.
Thoughts ?

Thanks

First loosen the soil then just get an old bed spring, steel frame model, not box spring and turn angle iron side up and just drag around with a chain, neighbor did this when he built his new house, had a very nice seedbed when done

Hi Anthony,
I've done this a few times. I use a disc, then box blade. First I disc, making about 5 or 6 (or so) complete passes. With each pass the disc will dig a little deeper. When I'm done discing, I use a box blade (with the teeth up, not digging) and just drive around and around and around while keeping the box about 1/2 to 3/4 full. Be patient and enjoy it while discing and box blading, it takes multiple passes for both. When done, it looks as smooth as a city neighborhood lawn ready for sod.

Run a disk across it ightly to loosen up the top few inches of soil. Or you can buy the box-type scraper blade that comes with the "scarifier" teeth you can put up and down, they will tear up the ground and then you flip them up and blade it smooth.

And that will work ? I went to look at a box blade last weekend. The teeth were about a foot apart. It was a 5 foot box. My property has been growing grass the past few years, I don't know what it was used for before, so I don't know exactly how tight the soil is. It is just rough. It seemd to me the teeth would just tear up a small narrow row. My other option I was thinking of, is, to rent a tractor with a rototiller, tear up the first 2-3 inches. I know, it will be slow.
Thanks Boys.

Nope, probably won't work with a good grass cover like that, only on packed bare soil that the teeth can shatter. I would disk it in several directions, or use a roto-tiller like you mentioned. However, depending on the grass cover and root mass, the tiller may clog up with wads of grass on the tines and you will have to keep getting off the tractor to clear the tines. I recently tore out a rock wall in our yard and used my disk and a plain blade to smooth it out and it works real well. Haven't tried it on a plain grass patch. Good luck and keep us posted!

HI, I think the box scraper does the best and easiest job. Bill

Anthony,
Just did just what you described weekend before last. Take your blade and turn it around backwards and drag it like that. It will fill in low spots and scrape off high spots and does a pretty good job of smoothing out ground.

That is kind of what I was hoping to do. I read some comments on the internet, I don't recall exactly where, but some folks said that backblades can have a tendency to skip over, or "slide" over the grass, does not really dig in,
they suggested some weight may be. I hope to loosen it enough then rake it, I bought a second hand 3pt rake last year for $100 bucks. Works goods, but I need to get the soil loose first.
Thanks.
