I was thinking of installing a plastic wrapper on my baler and thought i would get everybodies opinion on the goods and bads of wrapping compared to tying. I have never wrapped any so i would like to know if it's a good idea or not. Thanks Ken.

have used 530 535 and using a 566 now and yes a net wrap could be added to a 435. 535...cost is high..had wrap on 535 and 566..have 4 people that do not use wrap on their hay, but all the rest do..you have less loss of hay..but i live in east tx and don't have to deal with ice...have a nice day may god bless

I do custom hay baling here in north central Texas. I wasn't aware of a attachment you could add to a baler for plastic wrap. I of course have seen many set ups of net wrap on balers from the factory. I would also think that in order to install a net wrap or plastic wrap attachment the baler would have to be available with either wrap process from the factory?
I know alot of people like the net wrap and I might if I tried it but it seems to me that it would be more of a hassle than it would be worth, especially if ice were on the bale!!! I'll stick with twine for now.

Ken,

Not sure if you are referring to "net wrap" or stretch film. I haven't seen an attachment to put stretch film on bales on a baler, they probably have one. Film is generally used to make baleage. I rent a wrapper and wrap both baleage and some dry hay. Only problem is having to deal with all that wet, nasty, muddy plastic. On a cold, rainy day I hate to get out of the warm dry cab and cut it off. Then it is a pain to dispose of. Up side is it really protects the hay.

As far as net wrap, lot of guys here use it. Does appear to really reduce spoilage and makes hauling outside stored bales a breeze. It worked out cheaper for me to tie with sisal and store inside. Can build a shed pretty cheap. Cedar poles, some 2/6's, and some cheap tin from an over run. Plus, like with the plastic film, I don't have to get off the tractor in the mud and rain to cut that net wrap off. 28'x72' shed (on a barn) cost me under $3000 in materials and labor. Holds 150 rolls (stacked), that's $20.00 a roll, at $2.00 a roll for net wrap its even money in 10 yrs.

Ken I do not have a wrap attachment on my baler, but having talked with those who do I would like to have one. Advantages are less spoilage when stored outside, quicker baling time it takes two revolutions of the bale to wrap compared to how many with twine. most guys I have talked to say they can cut and unwrap when feeding quicker. The only disadvantage I can think of is the cost of installing and the cost of the wrap itself. I am not a big time farmer and store my hay inside and for my operation I do not feel the expense is justified but I can see in some operations where it would be money well spent
