Welding 1/2 steel

I am needing to weld a piece of 3/8" steel on top of a piece of 1/2" steel. They will be on top of one another (a lap joint?)and welded "in the crack". My question: What type of rod and how many amps (AC stick welder)should I run? Should I bevel the edges between the pieces first? This will have a load bearing force on it.

1 bevel the edges between the pieces first at about 15 deg. the amps. on your welder will depend on the speed at witch you weld( tip the higher the amps the more penitration ) but not high enough to blow threw the metal 2 use a 7018 rod 1/8 it is a use an even motion or you will run over the flux making weak spot 3 weld the area in about 3 to 5 passses , Don't try to fill the joint in one pass or it will be a weak spot. 4 run your first pass then clean all the flux off just a light hit with a hammer will pill the flux off it is ran right.
then continue till you have filled the gap completely

we were told in shop class to weld 1/8th in steel with 1/8th in welding rod at 100 amps. you could weld 3/8ths to 1/2 at 115amps to 130 amps for a good strong hold. using a 6011 electrode size 1/8th inch in diameter. the 60ll is a general purpose rod because it can penetrate through rust,galvanized material and painted areas with no problem at all.

I'd bevel the pieces as Hank says then tack well on the corners and finish welding with 5/32" 6011 @ 150-160 amps (adjust amps as needed).

Welding with DC is better but if you only have AC , use 7018 AC rod & run the welder at 100 amps .Bevel edges first to use as fill -in areas for better looking job . If you run your welder too high you're burning the metal as you weld making a poor job of it . I have a friend that's a pro guide me . You'd love a AC/DC welder for it's versatility . Brent, I would use AC 7018 rod at about 125 amps. As far as beveling the edges goes, if you do it will give you a little stronger weld "more surface that is welded". I would put a little more bevel on the 1/2" piece than I did on the 3/8" piece. Good luck!!
