I have a John Deere Van Brunt Model FB-A 17x7. I'm looking for a gear part with part number H528M stamped on it. Anyone with part to sell or may know where I can get one, please email me at [email protected].

Thanks.

We bought one 3 years ago for $300. It works great and we get good stands. The only problem we have is that the stafts sometimes stick over the winter, even though we store it inside. If you let it down and take off with stuck shafts, it will break the little ears at the ends. They cost about $70 and take a while to get. We always oil the shafts and turn them with a wrench when we get it out each year.

This drill is a very good one, if kept up nicely. We have my grandpa's old 12ft drill (still on original, very cracked and brittle tires)and we use it every year for oats, and occaisionally for sudan grass and other grains. We also use it to seed down alfalfa along with our oats, and have 2 7-8ft crushers behind it to smooth out the feild a little. This year we have a fine tooth drag that we may try instead, as our crushers have seen better years as well. They really don't like the road, and the county doesn't like it either, seeing as they're not on rubber, or anything for that matter. I'll just have to weld up a hitch for the middle to pull the drag with, instead of the 2 that are on it for the crusher right now.

The John Deere Vanbrunt drill are good but are getting old. 1959 was the last year they put the Vanbrunt name on them. In 1960 it was only John Deere on them. If your want to use a drill without press wheels, you will need to use a Pulverizer. Also known as a crusher after the drill.

I don't use a cultipacker after my old FB single disk, only drag chains. No problems with the stand. Anyway, the old-timers said you shouldn't pack oats.

JJ Grandpa baught one new and Dad baught it from him. Great little drill accurate when set right. Dad sold it to a neighbor who let it set outside for a couple years. When my brother baught it back one of the bars that turn the mettering wheels was stuck and several of the little doors that set the seed rate were rusted and needed to be replaced. These are expensive. If the drill set out, check over real well for rust. Pack wheels just get the seed to germinate faster. We never used them. We did drag a 5/16 log chain tied one axel to the other for better coverage some times. Never had a problem with a stand. If you only need it for oats I would broadcast it and then light disk for cover.

I use a Vanbrunt drill model B to drill small acreage. It's only 8 ft. But it can drill any kind of seed from millet to kidney beans ! At least thats what the chart shows in the lid.I use it to drill grass seed around the yard- Works fine. By the way ,I spent the last 5 years trying to find a small drill and I found this one 200 miles from my house for 25 dollars! I get a lot of people stopping at the house to see if it's for sale.I have to hid it in the back barn!

Used one in the 80's was a good drill. needs to be dry ground. chains work fine, a lot of oats were broadcast only. not certain on the 300. I would pay that if in good working condition and I need a drill.

Is it a decent machine for it's age?
What kind of dollar value does a good one have?
Weak points?
How do the chains compare to press wheels?
I've never used planters with out press wheels.
Basically is it worth my time to look at getting
this one, or should i find a different machine?
It's in good shape, $300...
Thank you
jj

Is it on rubber. Is the grain free. Meaning will the shaft go around and you can set for how much seed you want to put on. You don't need pres wheel for oats. If the fert. is good that is plus. than 300 isn't to much.If it is wood on steelwheels I would look farther.
