What models of NH round balers do you prefer? Running a 70hp tractor wanting to make 4x5 bales, mostly fescue hay and barley straw some clover and alfalfa. Quite a few are coming up for auction this spring. What's the price range? Neighbor has been baling in the past with a Hesston and it seems to always clog and not form a tight bale.

I have a couple of neighbors that run late model chain type NH balers with the air bag suspension. One year when I was short of hay, I bought some bales from them. I was really surprised at how good those bales were. I would say they were as good as the bales made by the belt type balers.
If $$$ is a concern you could pick one of these up for a lot less than the newer belt type NH balers.

Running 2 NH 650's. Great machines. Can set bale tension so tight a cow can hardly pull the hay out if you want to. I normally run mine set for 4x4 or 4x5 but they do 4x6 at full size (reason is a 4x4 bale brings as many $$ as a 4x6 in this market).

640,644,648 all make a 4x5 bale. They are listed in order of age. There are few differences between the models, mostly relating to apron rolls, bearings and supports. Updated parts used on 648's will fit a 640 and 644. Not a big deal. Autowrap is a dual twine arm, automatic mechanical tying system (twine only, no net) that is simple and durable. Bale Command is the electronic tying and netwrapping system. Also usually troublefree, but many components & harness. 650,654,658 are 4x6 balers, but can be adjusted down to 4x5 easily. Offers the same tying options as the 40,44,48.
