Has anyone ever converted a 7000 plate-type planter over to plateless? I was wondering if it was possible/difficult/expensive because it seems like the plate planters sell dirt cheap compared to the finger-pickup models. I guess I'm probably thinking too much. Anyway, thanks for your input.

The plate types do a good job of planting cotton but are too high maintenance for other crops. You can change them over easily by unbolting the bevel gear assembly and installing the plateless drive engagement assembly on the side panel. You must have JD or Kinze hoppers and seed cups. Also the seed tubes are different from the plate type. I change eight rows of a twelve row planter over to plate type every year to plant cotton then change it back to plant beans.

The plate type planters sell dirt cheap because no one wants to mess with plates anymore. Whole reason for inventing the planter. With a plate 7000, you just have a better placement system, not a good singulation system. You could convert to plateless by getting units from another planter. Some people may have them for sale if they build a hybrid planter, IH seed drums with JD placement units.
