I just cut 30 acres with a 5' rotary mower using a 1971 Ford 3000. No O.R C., Didn't see any need for one. What part of this puzzle am I missing?

Over running adaptors are for tractors that do not have an independent pto. Yours does, so no need for one. You would understand if you had an 8n or so....

Don't know enough about Fords to be sure, but you may have an ORC built into your PTO (my 88 JD750 does) or you may have Independent PTO so the flywheel effect of the mower doesn't affect the transmission.

The thing to look for is this: With the mower/pto running at full speed and the tractor in gear and travelling at an acceptable ground speed, push in the clutch, and apply the brakes gently. If you can feel the mower "pushing" the tractor, you need an ORC.
