Can anyone tell me where to get parts for a JD no.5 sickle mower? I pulled one out of a fencerow last year expecting it to be junk but it seems to be in fairly decent shape. Unfortunately, I broke the cast iron piece that holds the bar on the frame.

Also, can I re-do the attachment points to fit a 3 pt. hitch on my Farmall H? I know, red and green don't mix but I hate to just junk it!

Many parts for these mowers are still available from John Deere. That is things like the pitman and cutter bar parts.

Here's a link to hooking the #5 to a tractor. There are several ways to do it.

You are aware that you can hook up a #5 to an H Farmall perfectly well without any 3 point at all, arn't you?

If therenis any side to side sway in your 3 point hitch set up, it will have to be secured. The #5 was meant to be ridgidly hitched to the tractor. On a John Deere, at least, there were round bars which bolted to the drawbar frame. The clamps on the mower attached to them. A different setup was used with the Farmalls and is best illustrated in the OWNERS MANUAL at the back of that book! Using the #5 with a 3 point hitch wasn't reccomended, or specifically the 3ph on a 420JD wasn't reccomended. That is because it had side to side movement. The 3ph on the 420 is just like most a/m hitches I have seen for most older tractors.

My Father successfully used a #5 with a 420 some 30 years ago because my he had fabricated a special, homemade hitch which provided the round bar to clamp onto, and which solidly braced the 3ph from any movement side to side.

I used a #5 JD mower on my Farmall M for years. Worked great. I still use it occasionally on my 4020. My M didn't have 3 point so I just bolted the drawbar of the mower to the drawbar support of the tractor after removing the drawbar of the tractor from it's support and tying it off to the side out of the way. I have quite a few parts for a #5 but not the casting you are talking about. If you need anything else let me know. David

Check salvage yards fence rows etc you might find another mower. Also could it be welded? I have your combo works great. If you have jd hitch you can put a pipe in the hitch and weld pins in each end for 3pt. Also helps to have double spool to run 3pt and cylinder on mower. Where I live there are quit a few of these. If this mower has the hitch for ih tractors take the hitch off 3 pt will fit right up to it. Well enough confusion. Good luck.
